Quote Of The Whenever:
"May your claws be gentle and kind."
02.27 - 03.04 - Happy Birthday to us!
- So what are we doing to celebrate? Well, I took about 11 days off,
that's what I did. But not to worry. Aside from sales figures, nothing
major has really happened. But we will be launching some new stuff
soon. Today is the official 8 year anniversary for DMG Ice. I
-unfortunately- do not have time to break out the eight gifts tonight,
so Tuesday and Wednesday updates will be all about the gifts. Here you
go, though! 8 random spaces for the win!
- Something Old
- Something New
- Something Borrowed(?)
- Something Blue
- Something That Sounds Good
- Something That Looks Good
- Something Ahead Of The Times
- Something Behind The Times
And there you have it!
02.16 - Cat Ear Justice
- Hey, do you use Opera or Firefox? Well, those are the only browsers
that I really throw any kind of support behind. Anyhow, there was a
recent Nintendo DS conference in Japan where they showed off the DS
Lite in all its sexiness. They also announced an Opera designed WEB
BROWSER for the Nintendo DS. Just so you know, this website is DESIGNED
to look its best on portable devices like the Sony PSP, and -now- the
Nintendo DS. The Opera web browser was not announced for US release;
but we should see more information on the browser at E3 2006. Also
anounced were an ONLINE Winning Eleven game, a Calligraphy Trainer, a
cooking trainer, a 1-SEG TV Tuner (which is not supported in the
USA), and that new Super Mario Bros. will hit in May. So, we
finally get a real Super Mario Bros. 5, an online soccer/football game,
the ability to check this website ALL THE TIME in hopes we update, and
a game that can teach you how to cook for yourself. Top that off with
Majesco announcing a Mech Assault game for the Nintendo DS, and you
have cake. BAM! Let us take this incredibly loveless article and direct
it toward the Sony PSP for a moment. All is not fine
in UMD land. Personally, I wish the PSP screen were a little bit
better, since the PSP now has the worst screen in the market thanks to
the Micro, DS Lite, and the newer GBA SPs. As for movies on the PSP?
That, and pictures/internet testing, are all I use my PSP for. Sony
cutting back on UMDs is a bit sad; because I am almost tempted to buy
some of them. A lot of anime does look good on the PSP UMD format. Go
pick up the Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex UMD and Samurai
Champloo, okay? A bunch of new content heading up soon. The transition
between the old and the new computers is well underway. If anyone knows
a good "free" image editing solution that is close to Photo Studio
2000, let me know. I prefer to use my older tools; but they become less
and less available. No suggesting Gimp or Photoshop. Those are for
suckers. Later, everyone! Stay good.
02.14 - Happy Valentine's Day? - Or not. Who cares! The new equipment has arrived, so we are transitioning things at this moment. Here is a link
to an editorial I put up a while back, but forgot to link to. I know I
should have MORE content for the people and I will. No reason to get
all Dick Cheney at me. Well, put down the guns and read some news! The
Nintendo DS Lite will hit in March and drop PSPs like they were
Whittington. It comes in three colors: Pretentious White, Pale Blue,
and Navy Blue. Apparently the Oynx Black color will not be a Japanese
launch. The news on the unit is that GBA games stick out a little from
it. Nintendo may be considering a revision of their Option Paks for the
DS as well. The other interesting piece of news is that Boktai 4 for
the Nintendo DS will NOT require you to go outside. Nice. If we could
only get Boktai 3 over here in the states already, I would be happy.
The first screen shots of Mother 3 have surfaced and it looks like a
slightly more stylized version of Mother 2. Which is fine with me. I
think that now would be a good time for Nintendo to repent and give us
Mother 1 + 2 in the USA. They can even call it Mother in the USA. We do
not mind. Fire Emblem did well, you know? Anchor Bay is set to release
horror classics Near Dark and The Hill Have Eyes on March 7 on PSP UMD.
We will have a review of these soon, so you will know soon enough if
you should plunk down the cash from your Valentine's Day Subsidized
Dating or not.
02.07 - Those aren't socks -
I should never plan things. So, anyhow, here is the latest news and I
will have some new content up when I have new content up. New equipment
is on its way to help, thankfully. Well the news is that Atlus is
bringing Yggdra Union to the USA this Fall. And there will be more news
later.
01.30 - Schedules, schedules -
Here is the scoop! A new Hbomb article on Tuesday, a new Stephen Kelley
article on Wednesday, a new Viral Speak on Thursday, and a bunch of
reviews on this Friday. There you go! Right now, please enjoy this restored article in the form of a new (sort of) Philip Rational.
as for general news? Apparently, the PSP is finally fixed to play
homebrew again. Why not use Communism (google) to find out more on that
one. Also, Brain Age: Train Your Brain, and Big Brain Academy are set
for April 17, and March 30 respectively. Brain Age: Train Your Bain
also includes Sudoku free of charge. Yes. BUY IT.
01.26 - I liked the part where Ken got his ASS KICKED -
I'm not talking about that Street Fighter II animated movie either!
Unless you just woke up and we are the first news place you check;
which SHOULD be true for a lot of you. Wink. Wink. Nintendo announced a
re-design of the Nintendo DS. This new design is called Nintendo DS
Lite. Here is the official press release
from Nintendo of Japan. I find it pretty funny that Lik Sang broke NDA
on this one, then Nintendo pushed the announcement back one week to
spite them. The best part about this? The day before this was
announced, the head of Nintendo of Europe said that "There will not be
a DS redesign debut at E3." Of course, this meant they would push it
out earlier, huh? Well, here is what you need to know.
- Screen Size: The same.
- Size: 133 x 74 x 22
- Weight:218 grams
- FOUR levels of screen brightness.
- D-Pad is the same as the Micro. (Smaller)
- B,A,X,Y are the same as the Micro. (Larger)
- Select, and Start are the same as the GBA SP (Smaller)
- The Microphone is between the screens now.
- Backwards Compatible with GBA games and Compatible with DS Option Paks.
- Will launch in Black, White, and Blue. (Apparently)
- Power Button is a switch on the side now.
- Volume Button is apparently the same as the Micro. (Hold L to adjust brightness.)
- Power Cord is also apparently the same as the Micro. (Which suddenly opens up link play for GBA games!)
- This comes out in Japan on March 2, 2006 for the Yen equivalent of $160USD.
Well, this is good news
for Nintendo, it is BAD NEWS for Sony. Even the older -decidely larger-
Nintendo DS is beating the PSP EVEN with a shortage going on! Check out
the Media Create Japanese hardware sales for the week of January 16 to
22.
- NDS = 64,515
- PSP = 38,271
- PS2 = 26,271
- GBASP = 7,912
- GBM = 4,653
- GC = 4,490
- X360 = 3,616
- GBA = 236
- Xbox = 83
Well, Nintendo managed
to sell almost TWICE the amount of hardware during a shortage than Sony
did without a shortage. This redesign is a bit bitter for Sony. Maybe
they should go ahead and redesign the PSP? I mean, soon it will THE
portable system with the worst, darkest, and least active screen. There
is a LOT that can be done to redesign Sony's clunker. Maybe we will see
a redesign for the PSP at E3? BEcause they will need it if Nintendo
unveils the Game Boy Evolution at E3. The Game Cube almost outsold the
Micro that sales week and sales of the Xbox 360 have been fairly
steady. I think that a break out title may put it as high as FIVE
digits. Wow. Lex Luther must be happy over this. People, the Xbox 360
is full of KRYPTONITE. KRYPTONITE!
But all of that does not matter. There is an awesome new Nintendo DS unit coming out after all!
01.25 - Stature Wise - Some
interesting newsity today. First the good news! Nintendo announced over
3 million users on their Nintendo Wifi service. Considering they only
have three games that use the service, this is really good news.
Especially since it took Xbox Live nearly an entire YEAR to get to that
number. The bad news is that Capcom has finally given Mega Man
Anniversary Collection for Game Boy Advance the axe. Sadly, it looks
like the game will go the way of the DinoSaur or some other Dead
Sauropod. Who knows what DaStarDly Scheme contributed to the DiSturbing
anD Sad DemiSe of the game. I should get those fixed. Well, that's it
for now! Later!
01.24 - Dropping the ball. - Looking
forward to attempting to update at least once every day for a while as
I get rid of excess content in my IN box. Here is a brand new "controversial" Philip Rational column from yours truly!
01.23 - Welcome back! - Welcome
to DMG Ice.com for this year of 2006. First off, an apology for the
lack of updates since Christmas. This long hiatus has been used to
recover from colds, work on various side-projects, design and compile
new content, and learn to snake very well in Mario Kart DS. Today is
also the birthday of Sarah Tomase, one of our columnists.
Congratulations, Sarah! You are now one year closer to death! Whoo! Now
we shall go to the newsity that we missed in our short hiatus.
Nintendo announced that March 20th, 2006 will be the day that I may
begin kicking ass in Metroid Prime Hunters, and taking names in Tetris
DS. Tetris DS will be a Nintendo developed version of Tetris with ten
player battles, online play, and other features that have not been
mentioned yet. Aside from that wonderful bit of news, the rest of the
news is less gripping.
Sales data is a bit of a mess right now. During the Christmas season,
the Nintendo DS had sales of over 200,000, 400,000, and 500,000 units
per week. This caused the Nintendo DS to sell out drastically, this
meant Nintendo of Japan even had to pull part of their US stock of
Nintendo DS units to repackage and ship them for sale in Japan. It also
means that the other handheld has a chance to catch up. Here are the
latest Media Create sales statistics for Japan from January 9, 2006 to
January 15, 2006.
PSP = 57,686
DS = 54,284
PS2 = 39,076
GBASP = 9,982
GBM = 6,341
Xbox360 = 6,107
GC = 5,465
GBA = 233
Xbox = 11
Expect the PSP to be on the top of the chart for another week or so,
while Nintendo works on shipping more DS units. The next large batch of
DS units is expected in early February. The PSP barely outsold a system
that is nearly impossible to find in Japan! Neat.
In the USA, we are still waiting on NPD stats for December. While not
the most accurate, they are better than nothing. A blog known as
Mercury News has been reporting that the PSP outsold the DS in the USA
by 1 Million units. Which it attributes to two sources: Mercury News,
and a report from the NPD which ISN'T OUT YET. I think I can claim Penn
& Teller on this until the NPD releases the real data in EARLY
FEBRUARY. Famitsu compiled a list of the best selling games of 2005.
The top of the list is actually ANIMAL CROSSING: WILD WORLD for the DS,
followed by Gran Turismo 4 for the PS2. Don't feel bad, Sony zombies!
It's not like GT4 was outsold by POKEMON EMERALD in the United States
of America according to NPD TRSTS data. Oh, wait a moment. IT WAS.
Well, that about wraps it up. I have a ton of reviews to post up in the
next update as well as a long awaited Viral Speak!
