DMG Ice: Welcome to the first DMG Diva interview of 2004! The month is January and our diva is Samus Aran! We have done an interview with her before. She was the third "DMG Diva" back in the day. And by the day, we mean YEARS ago. She has starred in a sequel to Super Smash Bros. as well as a First Person Shooter, and another Game Boy game since we have spoken to her. Samus has been busy indeed. Next month, she returns to Game Boy Advance in a reimagining of her first Nintendo Entertainment System adventure. We caught up with her and got to ask her a few questions. Samus has always been one of our favorite DMG Divas. This interview is a bit of a homecoming for both of us. Anyhow, here is the girl of the hour: Samus Aran!

Samus Aran:
You're with what website again?

DMG Ice:
Dmg Ice, we did an interview years ago with you for DMG Diva. We brought it back and want you to be the first beautiful lady we interview in the new edition.

Samus Aran:
Oh! I remember that site, it's still alive? Updates on it are so few and far between, I figured it was dead years ago. Nice to see someone actually updating it. I was expecting it to go the way of ZHQ, The Loud House, and Square Net.

DMG Ice:
Yeah, we're alive. As you seem to be too with all the recent games. What was it like moving to a first person perspective after all these years?

Samus Aran:
Well, Retro Studios did a few miracles on pulling my adventures in like that. They not only got to tell a somewhat forgotten chapter of my many adventures, they managed to make Ridley uglier, and educate players on Chozo culture. Overall, it was sweet. I would like to say that -gameplay wise- I kicked the Master Chief's gay ass to all ends of the universe. Too bad there was no multi-player action, huh? I just wish that they had extended the game a bit to show a bit of other Metroid evolutions. Maybe with the upcoming Metroid Prime Sequel, you'll get to see an Omega Metroid in 3-D? Wouldn't you like that?

DMG Ice:
We would all like that. Although, it may not be a good idea to diss Halo. There's a lot of rabid fans of that game.

Samus Aran:
Give people semi-decent multi-player and they'll get addicted to anything. Remember Goldeneye and Perfect Dark? Huge cult following; but almost ONLY because of the multi-player. Goldeneye wasn't better than, say, Half Life or Quake 2; but it did have a huge following caused by lack of choice in that genre. Oh, (I'm) looking forward to playing Half Life 2 in my free time between games. Although I may have to upgrade my space ship to play it by the time they actually finish it. Multi-Player is good; but I like my games to be more personal. Just the player and I working our way through huge and creepy enviroments, taking on evil, and splatting some bugs. I also tried America's Army. Are they really that anal about protocol? It's like being back in the Galactic Federation Police!

DMG Ice:
Pretty much. I really love the side scrolling adventures you have h. Metroid: Zero Mission looks to be a remake of sorts. The game retells your first adventure with way more detail and more plot points. Why would you do that?

Samus Aran:
Well, the first game was awesome, I made it awesome. However, sugar, the first game doesn't blend too well with Metroid Prime. With all the new plot points that were revealed in Metroid Fusion, Super Metroid, and Metroid Prime; there really needed to be a remake of the first game. Don't you want to know why Zebes was like that in the Super Metroid? I think you'll enjoy what is being done immensely. And with all that people will learn from the manga that Tokyopop is publishing this Summer, it's really needed.

DMG Ice:
Yeah, we know that Ridley killed your parents and almost killed you when you were younger. The series is really about the battles between you and Ridley in a way. He's as constant as the Metroids in the series. What is Ridley, really?

Samus Aran:
Besides a pain in the butt? Ridley is something that just won't die. You could almost say that Ridley is my opposite. The Ying to my Yang, the dark to my light, the Fire to my Water, and you get the point. There's even a connection between Ridley and my years at the Federation Police; but maybe you'll see that in a future game.

DMG Ice:
You know it drives us crazy when you tease like that. Oh, Kraid is a villian I have to mention. He used to be so small on the NES; but in the remake of the first game, he is huge. Do you like your Kraid huge and mean, or small and lean?

Samus Aran:
I like huge Kraids; because they leave more of a mess when I finish them.

DMG Ice:
Oh, what was it like fighting S.A.X. and how do you like having Metroid-infused abilities alongside your Chozo-infused abilities?

Samus Aran:
S.A.X. was a nightmare; but was a little misunderstood. I mean, it was literally just a ticked off parasite. For years, Metroids fed on the X; but now it had the power to fight back. I don't blame it for being ticked off; but I just wish it didn't think of me as a threat. Now, as for the whole Metroid-infusion thing? It's a little strange sometimes as I suddenly feel the need to eat at random times and get really mad when people mess with the thermostat. The other day, I got kicked out of a resturant that advertised "All you can eat Shrimp." Hey, it is not my fault that they don't cook fast enough! A girl's gotta eat!

DMG Ice:
This is a bit of a throw back question; but what have you been listening to lately?

Samus Aran:
I got a radio installed into my helmet that picks up over 900 million channels, so I just randomly surf the radio as I work or fly places. I developed this weird taste for Shania Twain's music. It's really quite embarassing; but I also like Polyphonic Spree. It's really happy. That helps when you're exploring some God-forsaken slime hole looking for whatever space pirate terrorist the Federation is after today. Bounty hunting is tough, you know?

DMG Ice:
What color is your hair REALLY? While, it seems to be mostly blonde, we have also seen it brown, green, and strangely red. What's up with that?

Samus Aran:
I like my hair blonde mostly. Because of the Chozo blood running through my veins: my hair has a tendancy to change from time to time. Sometimes, that is because of my mood or other factors. Maybe in a future game, my hair will be blue? Would you like that?

DMG Ice:
More than you know. What was your relationship with Adam? Was he a suitor?

Samus Aran:
A lady never speaks of people from the past, especially dead ones. I will say that I have a great respect for him. Oh, before you ask: Yes, I returned my little green friends to their proper planets. Dacola and Etecoons are just too cute to keep!

DMG Ice:
You read minds now, huh?

Samus Aran:
That is because I am awesome, remember?

DMG Ice:
Oh, yeah! I have a question that seems out of context; but I'll ask it anyways: What do you think about pre-emptive strikes?

Samus Aran:
I'm usually the one cleaning up after unsuccessful ones; but I am for them as you all saw in Metroid Prime. I have to follow those damn Space Pirates to the ends of the universe if that is where they go. You go where the evil is and you eradicate it. Don't leave evil alive or it will come back to harm you. It really is "get them first" in my line of work. Where ever evil lives, I will find it and make it dead. It isn't easy; but it is worth it. I just hope that someday, I will ultimately win; but until then.. I have to EARN what little peace the galaxy has.

DMG Ice:
Samus Aran, you are the best damn female character ever. We mean it. What would you like to say to your fans before we go?

Samus Aran:
Keep fighting, buy my games, and don't believe any of that terrible Mario Therapy stuff. Oh! Metroid: Zero Mission will be awesome. Line up outside your stores to buy it!
